The Village
of Red Hook receives NYS DEC grant for tree planting
Red Hook, NY ,
April 19, 2006- The Village of Red Hook has received a grant from the New
York State Department of Environmental Conservation's Urban and Community
Forestry Program for tree planting.
Approval was received for the maximum award of $7500.
The Village Green, the village's tree committee, will use the funding
to plant 100 trees throughout the village in the next two years. Since 2002, the committee has planted about 85 trees along
the village of Red Hook streets. An
additional 25 trees will be planted in the annual spring planting at the end
of the month. Two
plantings, one each spring to celebrate Arbor Day, and one each Fall are
done every year with the help of many volunteers.
Once again, the
Village of Red Hook has been recognized as a Tree City USA, an award
sponsored by the National Arbor Day Foundation.
This is the fourth year the village has received the award.
To become a Tree City, a community must have: a tree ordinance, a
forestry program with a budget of at least $2 per capita, a tree board, and
an Arbor Day observance.

ABOUT VILLAGE
GREEN: The
Red Hook Village Green Committee formed in Spring 2002 as a result of a
growing concern by village citizens and businesses over trees which were
being removed but not replaced. As a result of the committee’s work,
the Red Hook Village Board passed into law an ordinance implementing a
community forestry program. Not dealing with mere tree replacement, the
ordinance ensures the proactive pursuit of a healthy tree population for the
village and charges the Red Hook Village Green Committee with carrying out
the effort. To date, the committee has planted more than 85 new trees.
The Village of Red Hook is proud to have the designation as a “Tree City
USA”. Dedicated to
beautifying and ensuring the ecological health of the Village of Red Hook,
the Red Hook Village Green Committee welcomes the support of all community
members. More information can be found at the committee’s website: http://www.redhooknyvillage.org/villagegreen
